Disease Prevention & Treatment

Home Disease Prevention & Treatment

Spectacle Gallery is not limited to routine or comprehensive eye exams.  Dr. Kristin Doyle is licensed and strongly experienced in:

  • Ocular disease management (glaucoma, macular degeneration, hypertensive and diabetic retinopathy to name a few)
  • Dry eye treatment and management
  • Ocular infection treatments (pink eye, red eye, inflammation, watery eyes, light sensitivity)
  • Ocular injury treatment
  • Foreign body stuck in eye

It is so important to take good care of your eyes so they work properly well into the future.

For most people, it is normal to experience eye problems from time to time. Many of these problems tend to be minor, but there are some cases when eye problems can cause serious damage and even cause permanent vision loss.

Fortunately, most eye problems can be prevented.

Common eye problems and how to prevent them

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is usually a hereditary condition, but can sometimes be caused by an injury to the eye or diabetes. It is a set of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve and can lead to blindness.  Glaucoma leads to loss of peripheral vision.

How to prevent it

Glaucoma is not always preventable. However, there are some easy ways prevent it from getting worse. The best way to prevent glaucoma from causing irreversible vision loss is to get frequent eye exams and eye screenings. This is even more important if you have diabetes or a family history of glaucoma.

Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration is a disease of the retina (the tissue inside the eye).  It causes central loss of vision, or distortion of vision. It is caused by sun damage, smoking, or genetics.

How to prevent it

Smoking cessation, UV protection, multi vitamins, and annual eye exams can prevent the onset of macular degeneration, or slow the progression.

Dry Eyes

Dry eyes can cause itchy, red, uncomfortable eyes, and may cause vision impairment. It typically occurs because your eyes are not producing enough tears. Tears are an essential part of keeping your eyes moist and healthy. Although dry eye is not a harmful condition, it can lead to serious issues, including eye infections.

Symptoms often include:

  • Eye redness
  • Light sensitivity
  • Itchy eyes
  • Watery eyes
  • Eye fatigue
  • Blurry vision

There are some dry eye issues that can be prevented while others are unavoidable. These issues include:

  • Underlying medical issues
  • Aging
  • Medical procedures
  • Certain medications

A treatable cause of dry eyes is Blepharitis (flakes, and inflammation of the eyelids cause by blocked glands).

Artificial tears recommended by Dr. Doyle are Systane or Refresh.  Dr. Doyle advises her patients not to use Visine brand eye drops. If over the counter eye drops do not relieve your symptoms, a prescription eye drop may be necessary.
