Contact Lens Hygiene

Home Contact Lens Hygiene

Please remember, NEVER sleep, shower, or swim in your contact lenses.

Sleeping, showering or swimming in your contact lenses greatly increases your chance of developing an eye infection that may lead to permanent vision loss.

Insert and remove your contact lenses with clean hands.  Use a lint-free towel to dry your hands.

Dispose your contact lenses as recommended by your eye doctor.  Depending on the brand of contact lenses you wear this could be every  night, 2 weeks, or  month

Clean your contact lenses every night with fresh clean solution.  Never reuse old solution.

Dr. Doyle recommends using either Optifree or Clear Care contact lens solutions.  If using Optifree, gently rub each contact lens with solution prior to storing in their case.  Never let the tip of your solution bottle to touch any surfaces, (cases, counters, fingers or eye).  Never clean your contact lenses with tap water.

Leave your contact lens case open and dry through out the day, in a clean environment.  Never clean your contact lens case with tap water.

Dispose your contact lens case every 2-3 months.

Never wear you contact lenses if your eyes are painful, red, abnormally sensitive to light, or if you are experiencing any discharge from your eyes.  Never wear your contact lenses in environments with harmful fumes or vapors.  Call Dr. Doyle immediately if these issues arise.

Never use expired contact lenses or solutions.

Bring a small, travel bottle of contact lens solution with you, as well as a back up pair of glasses, in case of any emergencies.

If your daily activities include a lot of reading, computer work, or exposure to a windy or dusty environment, it may be necessary to use a contact lens re-wetting drop once or twice a day.  Dr. Doyle recommends Blink, Refresh, or Systaine brands specifically for contact lenses.  Avoid Visine or Clear Eye brands.  Avoid touching the tip of your re-wetting drops to your eye, finger, or other surfaces.
